Tom Shippey begins his novel by describing how J.R.R. Tolkien came up with hobbits. He writes about the now famous story of Tolkien writing “in a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit” on a sheet of paper one of his students turned in. From there, Shippey explains that the word hobbit did, in fact, exist before Tolkien’s creation of Bilbo Baggins.
